Citizen of the Year for 2024

3/18/2025

Guadalupe Alvarez was named Rotary Citizen of the Year recently in honor of her decades of selfless community service in San Miguel and the world. This was the 18th consecutive year that the award has been presented to a non-Rotarian member of the community who best represents the ideals of Rotary such as service above self.

Alvarez’s long history of selfless service includes local beneficiaries including La Biblioteca Publica, Amigos al 100, and Mitigare Hospice. Following a devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Oaxaca, she helped replace 100 lost homes. Alvarez then helped African communities with clothes and food, and funded scholarships and start-up businesses. She built a school large enough for 350 students in Zambia and funded a soccer field, school supplies, uniforms, and more.

“Guadalupe is a thoughtful, generous citizen who epitomizes the values of Rotary,” said Rotary President Lee Carter to the full theatre audience.
