The Community and Rotarians Commemorate International Peace Day 2026

San Miguel de Allende community members and Rotarians gather to commemorate the International Day of Peace.

On Sunday, 20 September, members of the four Rotary clubs in San Miguel de Allende and community members of all ages gathered at noon at the Peace Monument in Benito Juárez Park to commemorate the United Nations International Day of Peace.

The celebration took place one day before the official United Nations observance on 21 September.

The message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” was expressed in six languages and forms of communication: English, Spanish, Otomí, Nahuatl, Mexican Sign Language and Braille.

Installed in Juárez Park in 2017, the Peace Monument is a four-metre-tall structure built of quarry stone and created as a symbol of peace and unity. Its multilingual message reflects the cultural diversity of San Miguel de Allende and its location within the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The monument also contains a time capsule with messages, children’s drawings and wishes for peace from community members. Placed beneath the Peace Monument in 2017, it is scheduled to be opened on 21 September 2067 — 50 years after its installation.

This event reflects Rotary's long-standing commitment to peace. In 1921, Rotary incorporated the promotion of peace and international goodwill into its constitutional objectives.

Today, promoting peace is one of Rotary’s seven areas of focus, receiving international support through initiatives such as the Rotary Peace Centers. These centers have trained over 1,900 fellows since the program began.

For the Rotary community in San Miguel de Allende, the 20 September gathering provides an opportunity to connect Rotary’s global dedication to peace with local initiatives.
