In 2014, Rotary SMA Midday nominated local educator Wendy Coulson to become one
of only a handful of prestigious Rotary Peace Fellows in Mexico. As a result, she traveled to Bangkok, Thailand, for a three-month intensive course in Peace and Conflict Resolution Studies at the Rotary Peace Center. In 2017, under Rotarian Tom Schneider’s leadership, and with the cooperation of the first Rotary Club in San Miguel, we built the largest Peace Pole in Mexico in Parque Juarez. It has been termed the most beautiful peace pole in the world by some who have traveled the world to see the other peace poles. On Tuesday, May 20, Wendy will speak at Rotary SMA Midday, and the presentation will be broadcast via Zoom from the Biblioteca Publica’s Sala Quetzal at 9:30 a.m. She wants to remind Rotary of the impact of one Rotary Peace Fellow in the world, and to encourage Midday to nominate potential peacemakers. Says Wendy, “With over 30 years working in education, I have built a career through vast experience as a consultant, coordinator, teacher, program manager and trainer. I specialize in early literacy for young learners and very young learners globally in addition to resource-limited teaching for all types of populations. Internationally, I have developed and co-created successful education programs for development and literacy projects using principles of sustainable development including peace.” After receiving her peace certificate in 2015, Wendy created education programs for peace and development projects such as Midday’s cistern project and worked locally with Audubon de México, CEDESA, the Children’s World Peace Organization, EEESMA, and Patronato Pro Niños. She also facilitated at the first national Global Peace Index’s pillars of peace conference for Mexican youth leaders. Wendy worked internationally with the American Councils, the British Council, international education in Central Asia, India, Bangladesh, Costa Rica, Colombia, National Geographic Learning, Norwich Institute for Language Education, TESOL International Association, the U.S. State Department, and in both Puebla and Chiapas, Mexico. Much of this work involved developing workshops and facilitating teaching training courses in English as a foreign language. She has also been sent to Jordan, Tunisia, Myanmar, Uzbekistan and other exotic locales for various projects. Wendy infuses education for sustainable development and global citizenship and transformative learning into her consultancy thanks to courses from Earth Charter International and the Inner Development Goals. She also writes curriculum, presents, and has published a few pieces on topics such as education for sustainable development for the English-language classroom. Wendy holds a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics/Teaching English to Speakers of two other Languages from Indiana University Bloomington, and a second Master’s degree in K-12 Education with an emphasis in Bilingual and Special Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Wendy now focuses on coaching, curriculum development, environmental sustainability, early childhood, global citizenship, primary and secondary education, coaching, mentoring and teacher education. This meeting will take place in the Sala Quetzal room in the Biblioteca. Please use the entrance on Relox. You are also invited to join us for breakfast at the Zenteno Cafe before the meeting.
